Lighting personnel
Lighting technicians are involved with rigging and controlling electric lights for art and entertainment venues (theater or live music venues) or in video, television, or film production. In a theater production, lighting technicians work under the lighting designer and master electrician. In video, television, and film productions, lighting technicians work under the direction of the cinematographer and gaffer. In live music, lighting technicians work under the chief lighting technician, who reports to the production manager.
Lighting technicians are responsible for the movement and set up of various pieces of lighting equipment for visual effects. Lighting Technicians may also lay electrical cables, wire fixtures, install color effects or image patterns, focus the lights, and assist in creating effects or programming sequences.
The Spotlight Operator, Followspot Operator, Followspot or Spot Op is a theatrical technician, defined as a lighting technician, who operates a specialized stage lighting instrument known as a followspot. A followspot is designed to move, change size, beam width, and color easily by hand. Followspotting is often seen as the apprentice role for new technicians, especially electricians, and having the role is occasionally referred to by some members of the run crew as being "a limey", a term derived from limelight.

Evaluation
In the entertainment practical task in groups of three which included myself, Grace and Kailey we had to set up and unpack the school hall PA system and set up and unpack a small PA system.
During this task when we were unpacking the system I turned off the main source of power which was not correct. Apart from this our group worked well together and effective communication allowed minimal difficulties. We helped each other out and worked efficiently to do the task.
When setting up the school hall PA system I had the job of setting up the microphone stand and using the UHF1 microphone. I thought as a group we communicated quite well. Kailey was functioning the lectern mic and we communicated effectively with Grace who was in the bio box working with the system. When the microphones didn’t work we told her and she would turn the sound up. The only difficulty we had is that the microphone chord was tangled and this took a while to straighten out.
OHS Issues
- Trip hazards
- Volume hazards
- Electrical hazards (broken and tangled chords)
- Wet floor surface in hall
Over the two days my group worked well but there is always room for improvement and if we were to do this task again we could possibly do it in a shorter amount of time and change the group roles around so everyone an have a turn at each separate group task.

The Production Elements

COSTUMES: Costumes were used to help support the 80's theme as well as fitting each different characters personalities. They effectively displayed the 80's genre.
VISUAL: The Visual screen was used in the background to add visual effects such as videos and images to compliment the performances
LIGHTING: Spotlights were used to point on the more significant actors in some scenes as well as coloured lights were used to help bright up the stage and support the theme of the 80's. The lighting made the set very interesting to look at.
SETS: The rubix cubes and lockers were the most significant items used in each scene. The backstage crew helped to set up each set for each separate scene effectively
My Role in the Musical
SPOTLIGHT: My job handling the spotlight required me to work with the lighting crew. I had to follow the script prompts to put the spotlight on the certain characters at specific times during each performance. This job was very simple but could be easily messed up if i wasn't paying proper attention. The spotlight was quite heavy and i was required to hold and move it allot.
BACKSTAGE: This job involved setting up the sets properly for the each Act and scene and making sure that correct props were on stage for each actor when they needed them. This job required allot of movement and thankfully no one was injured during the process. The job entailed of moving rubix cubes(boxes), desks, lockers and the blackboard on and off the set at the appropriate times. We had to use the sketches of the floor plans for each scene in the acts to distinguish what prop would go where on the stage.
I discovered many difficulties throughout the production:
- Communication: At time it became difficult to communicate with the backstage people on the other side of the stage due to the loud noise. We used allot of sign language, but this at times failed, although we had a runner who was able to go back and forth to help us to communicate more effectively.
Among these difficulties came a lot of success throughout the production.
-Teamwork: We worked great as a team in both the backstage and lighting area. There wasn't conflict at all really
-Learning experiences: I gained allot of knowledge about the entertainment industry which i could further use in later studies
-Successful Production: Everyone who worked on the set or backstage did their job to the best of their ability which meant the production was quite successful for everyone watching it.
The musical was a very fun experience for myself and i developed further knowledge about the entertainment industry, it also allowed me to work with friends and other people within my class i don't usually really work with.
